Welcome to the Believe in Black Rock (formerly knows as Dearborn Street Community Association) web site. There are a variety of things to find here. Please come back often and see what's new!

Believe in Black Rock was established to make for more cohesive living in the Black Rock area. Everyone living, working or who has a love for historic Black Rock is invited to participate in the monthly meetings and all events. The dues are $5 per year for per person. You do NOT have to be a dues paying member to attend a meeting. All are welcome to attend as many meetings as they'd like without paying anything. If you want to vote on issues and for officers, then you must be a dues paying member.

One of the latest things we are working on is teaming up is the possibility of putting in another Black Rock Community Garden. The location is at Farmer and Guernsey and Grassroots is considering the location as I write.

Eat Local #5 is happening Tuesday, May 29 at 6:30 pm at Angie's Pizza House on Niagara St. This is our first buffet dinner and is totally sold out as of 5/14/12.

Eat Local #4 happened on Saturday, April 28 at 6:30 pm at Barry's Bar and Grill on Amherst St. The reviews were phenomenal!

Eat Local #3 happened Thursday, March 22 at 6:30 pm at Nortel's on Hertel near Elmwood (across from the post office). Forty four people attended and all enjoyed!

Eat Local #2 happened Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 6:30 pm at Faso's Italian Restaurant on Niagara Street. The chicken capricio got rave reviews. Everyone seemed to have a great time and said they would do another Eat Local.

Eat Local #1 happened January 24 at Emily's on Tonawanda and Hertel. In retrospect, it started small with only 15 people and we couldn't have picked a better restaurant to kick it. Emily's has great food, reasonable prices and incredibly wonderful owners.

Come try the local flavor, if you don't support your local restaurants, they might not be there when you want to try them.

Please contact Susan Gartin (877-0532) or Matt Bucholz (598-2661) with any questions and to make your reservation.

You can read the bylaws of this organization to familiarize yourself with what the association is all about. The bylaws have been revamped and were ratified on February 6, 2012.

The agenda for the March 2012 meeting is now on line, the minutes of the March meeting are also live. Take a look and see what you have missed. The agenda will be posted one week prior to the meeting, the minutes will be up no later than two weeks after the last meeting.

The meetings are generally held the first Monday of each month at St. John's UCC Church on Amherst Street between East and Tonawanda Streets. Enter through the side door and go to the basement. Upon arrival, please sign in and help yourself to the print material on the table at sign in. Our next meeting is April 2, 2012.

Election for new officers took place on November 7, 2011. The new President is Susan Gartin, Jennifer Eckborg is Secretary and the Treasurer's position is shared between Claire Hans and Pat Todero. Congratulations ladies!

Have you noticed new things going on around Black Rock? There is a new website, the Black Rock Historical Society that will fill you in on all the new happenings! There are new flags that have gone up, historic markers being put in, a new mural that was painted on Tonawanda and Amherst Streets, the War of 1812 has sites marked. This website has a lot of pertinent info to our area. Take a look!

Bless Back Sunday at the Community Garden

There are a couple new additions to the Black Rock Heritage Garden on Dearborn and Hamilton. Take a look at the new sign and art.

New Garden Sign Garden Art
This is the new sign that identifies the Black Rock Heritage Garden. New garden art, the picture does it no justice. Come by and take a look.

Have you ever thought about the windows your neighbors peer out of? As you can often tell from walking down the street, there are a number of homes with absolutely gorgeous leaded and stained glass windows. Allentown has their doors, Black Rock has their windows. Take a peek and see a few that came from just one house in the area.

WARNING: There is a man walking around Black Rock looking for people with security systems. He then tells the homeowner that he needs to check the phone lines and their existing security system. If you have NOT called for service, do NOT let him in! Do not expose yourself by letting some unauthorized person "check out" your security system and phone line. You will know if your phone line is not working. If you have any questions about your security system, call your provider. BE SAFE!

The Black Rock Heritage Garden is in full swing of growing and harvesting. There is a recipe section of this web site that is meant to encourage you to use the harvest from the garden and if you are unsure what to do with something found in the garden give you an idea of how to cook it. If you have a recipe to contribute, please submit to Susan Gartin and she will make sure your recipe gets on the site and will give you credit for your great cooking ability!

Found a great video of Black Rock and a super article on Buffalo Rising about Black Rock. It's so worth a read and look!

The new Buffalo This Place Matters video is awesome. It's on You Tube and is well worth taking a look. It'll make you feel so proud of our city!
